Firstly, you are not on your own - dont forget there are other managers / management committee members who are there to help you, if you need it. Secondly, always remember if you are not offered help by your players parents, then ask for it - you cant do it all on your own! The purpose of this handbook is to inform all current and future Team Managers of their role and responsibilities to the players, the club, and themselves. This handbook is intended as a guide to principles, policies, and practices, for all areas of team management. It provides a useful reference for existing managers and a comprehensive document for potential new managers seeking to understand the role they are considering undertaking. The main content has been laid out in a question and answer format that we hope makes it easy to read and easy to find the subject of interest. Should you have any questions that are not answered in this document, please ensure they are fed back via the clubs Chairman or Secretary (John Shaddick or Dave Butler) These aims and objectives form the foundation of the clubs principles and its future direction, and will be binding on all club members. To ensure yearly progression certain rules and regulations have to be put into place to maintain a level of coordination, particularly with an entirely voluntary Management Committee and coaching team. This document builds a set of Team Management guidelines that help enforce and support those regulations. Please help us continue the exciting development of this club by adhering to these guidelines at all times. Club Aims & Objectives The aims and objectives of Portishead Juniors Football Club (PJFC) are clearly set out in the clubs Constitution and most recent Manifesto documents. Both of these documents can be obtained from the clubs Secretary or viewed on the club website. Laws of the Game All games shall be played in accordance with the Laws of the Game and the rules and regulations of The FA, Parent Association, League or competition to which PJFC is affiliated. PJFC Coaching Aims Each year group to have at least one (preferably two) FA level one coach, who takes on overall responsibility for that year group. All managers and coaches will be subject to the relevant Criminal Record Bureau CRB checks. The approved club coach will be made available to all age groups on a rotational basis to promote ideas and ensure consistent standards. Each game to be attended by a qualified emergency aid person who has attended an organised FA first aid course or equivalent. Promote and retain interest in the playing of Association Football. Develop standards and encourage progression to affiliated Senior teams. Codes of Conduct PJFC maintains three Codes of Conduct (for coaches, players, and parents) which its members agree to abide by. Child Protection PJFC has an appointed Club Welfare Officer (CWO) who has been accepted as a delegate for processing CRB check applications via The FA. All Team Managers will be expected to file a mandatory CRB application forms are available from Dave Butler. Contact details for the current CWO are distributed to all managers at the beginning of each season and can also be found on our web site at HYPERLINK "http://79.170.40.234/portisheadunited.org.uk/" http://79.170.40.234/portisheadunited.org.uk/ (soon to become HYPERLINK "http://www.portisheadjuniors.co.uk" www.portisheadjuniors.co.uk). Definitions Age Group this is the name given to the competing age group as defined by the FA e.g. Under 11. In the context of this document it applies to all players of all teams in any single age group. Team this is a single competing team of players within an age group. An age group may have multiple teams. Squad this is sometimes used as an alternative to Age Group. Strip this describes the players playing clothing i.e. shirt, shorts, socks. Kit the collective name given to strip and equipment. Equipment this includes training and playing items such as balls, goals, cones, first aid, etc. Manager The person responsible for the age group Coach / Team Manager The person(s) who are responsible for a single team and assist the Manager Qualifications Every team shall have at least one person who has successfully completed the FA Level 1 coaching course. Details of it and how to sign on to the course can be found at HYPERLINK "http://www.somersetfa.com" www.somersetfa.com Ideally, you need at least two qualified people per age group. The club will cover the cost of normally two people to complete the course, and will also pay for the necessary CRB checks for coaches. You may seek to become more qualified if you wish and continue to complete various coaching badges however, you are only required to complete the level 1 course. Kit Kit is an essential part of any managers wish list at the start of every season. In this section we detail standard club policy and how kit is provided. As a new manager, do I inherit any kit? This is possible. However, as a new team, you are expected to source sponsorship (see Sponsorship below) yourself. It is from this that you are expected to purchase your necessary kit. It is always worth searching on the web for any grants that may be available to assist you in obtaining kit or equipment. I was able to obtain 400 from the Football Foundation that funded our playing kit and training equipment. I have also just applied to Marsrefuel.com as they give away large amounts of cash to teams that need it if you dont ask, you dont get! What is each player provided with as standard? The choice of what players are provided with lies with the Manager. This person will decide whether each player owns/looks after there own individual pieces of kit, or whether overall responsibility rests with a nominated person. Do the players keep their strip after each match or do I collect it up? Again, this depends on the decision made by the manager. Certainly with the younger age groups, you will potentially have too many children for the amount of strips you need. Therefore, it is better to have it all collected in one place and ready for the next use. For the older age groups where the squads are limited due to league restrictions, then it may be easier to issue each player with their own strip. Do the players get to keep their strips at the end of the season? No. Where the strip is no longer big enough, it should be handed in to the club, or passed down to a younger age group where possible. What happens if a player loses part of his strip? It should be for that person to fund the replacement. Can I pick the strips colours and design? No. The club colours are set in stone. Black and White vertically striped shirts, black shorts and black socks. What is the policy on sponsorship of strips? There are rules depending on the age group as to the size of the sponsors logo, however, it is acceptable to have this displayed on the front of your match strip. Should you be able to have further sponsors and wish to have their logo on training kit then this is acceptable. Do the strips have numbers? Yes, you will be required to have at least numbers on the rear of your strip. Can the players have their names on their shirts? It is preferred that this does not happen in junior football. Can we have anything else on the shirts? You may or may not have the club logo. Other than that, no. Can I order other clothing such as jackets, fleeces, etc? Yes you can. For all clothing needs, you should use Imperial Sports (sole supplier), 467c Wells Road, Knowle, Bristol, BS14 9AG. 0117 9779988. HYPERLINK "http://www.imperialsports.co.uk/" http://www.imperialsports.co.uk/ What is each manager provided with as standard? Basic training equipment is also provided to all managers. This includes: Minisoccer goal(s) (U7s to U10s) - DO NOT BUY THESE - YOU SHOULD BE HANDED THESE FROM AN OLDER AGE GROUP Balls Bibs Cones If no sponsorship is found, then the club will pay for these however you are encouraged to raise the necessary money through sponsorship or events. It is also your job to secure these items and then bill the club - equipment should be sourced and is available from The Sports Shop, High Street, Portishead. How much of everything do I need? For U6s, 7s and 8s, it is useful to have one ball per child however, this can cause problems if your numbers are high over 25 for example. You will need one set of goals (should be handed down as other teams move up to full size goals at the end of a season). It is useful to have 4 colours of bibs, with 10 bibs of each colour (available from The Sports Shop, High Street, Portishead). Depending on the numbers and how you conduct your training, it may be necessary to have 100 cones of 4 or 5 colours (available from The Sports Shop, High Street, Portishead). Are there any rules on ball sizes? YES. It is recommended that Under 6s, 7s and Under 8s play and train with a Size 3 ball, Under 9s to Under 14s play and train with a Size 4 ball, and Under 15 and 16 play and train with a size 5 ball. New footballs should be purchased via The Sports Shop, High Street Portishead. Can I get some extra stuff such as training hurdles or training ladders? This is an extra cost and will have to be funded by a sponsor or parents. Please use Imperial Sports or The Sports Shop to make any such purchase as appropriate.. Where do I store all this stuff? At home. Unfortunately the club does not currently have a storage facility for equipment. You can delegate parents or coaches to assist. Who organises all this and determines my needs? You. It is the managers responsibility to ensure each team is adequately provided for well in advance of each season start. You need to determine all your needs including strip sizes. How do I order kit? Imperial Sports (contact info above) are very helpful and have connections with the club. As such, the club has arranged a special rate for ordering. Keith and Lesley run the company and will assist with samples if required. When must I order my kit by? Imperial Sports are quick, but you must be reasonable with regards to how soon you need the kit. You are advised to contact them direct to discuss. When will I get everything? If you are taking over an already established team, you should inherit the equipment already in circulation by them. If this is a new team (under 6s or 7s, or a newly formed United team), then you need to start organising the equipment you need ASAP. Sponsorship Does the club approve of sponsorship? Absolutely! It is important for YOUR team and more importantly for the club. Your sponsorship is paid in to the club, and then the club pay for your requirements from your sponsorship money. Try not to spend all of your sponsorship if you dont need to. Who organises sponsorship? YOU. PJFC does not have an official club sponsor and therefore managers are encouraged to source sponsorship for the squads themselves. You may be surprised by what is available from YOUR parents. What can be sponsored? In theory, anything. However, it is normal for the match shirts to be sponsored first. After that, training gear, footballs, bibs etc are all there! What does the sponsor get? Nothing is promised by the club. It is for you to arrange, and therefore for you to decide in consultation with your sponsor as to how they are advertised. How long does sponsorship last for? A matter for you and the sponsor to decide. Remember if you need to replace your kit after agreeing a 2 year sponsorship period, you will need to pay for the sponsors logos to be placed on your new strip too. Can I get any company to sponsor my squad? Pretty much, but exceptions include manufacturers of alcohol, fast food, and any other ethically unsuitable activities. Can I have multiple sponsors for my squad? See earlier answer but yes. Is there an official process for managing sponsorship? No. It is between you and the sponsor to arrange the details. Can a sponsor change the clubs colours to accommodate their logo? NO. Official Club Strip The club has a proud tradition and is keen to protect and develop its identity. The clubs strip is the most powerful form of identity that helps bond the players of all age groups into a single club community. It is therefore a foundation stone of the clubs history and its aspirations, and as such there are strict guidelines concerning kit colours and livery. What is the clubs official basic strip? Black and white vertical striped shirt, black shorts, black socks. Is there any flexibility with the official strip? NO. What livery is allowed on shirts? Numbers (compulsory), the club badge, players names and sponsor logo are all optional. Do these optional livery items need to be placed in a particular position on the shirts? YES. The sponsor logo must be placed on the centre front of the shirt~ club badge on the left breast~ number on the back. Is there an away strip? NO. If you encounter a strip clash then the home team is encouraged to use bibs. Your Squad How many players can I have in an age group? The club believes it is for the Manager to determine the right number of players necessary to maintain a successful age group. Clearly if the support of enough Team Managers is available and there are sufficient facilities to support multiple teams then multiple teams can be supported. Where sufficient numbers allow enough children for two teams, at mini soccer level, then this would normally mean the age group plays as an A and B team set up under the title of Portishead Juniors. This sets the age group up for entering the league at under 9s. If there are enough for three teams, then the third team will need to be set up as Portishead United with its own coaching staff. New managers come forward and set up the equivalent of a C team under the team name as Portishead United (still affiliated to Portishead Town and Juniors the ONLY difference is the name). They can enter a singles league, or if enough children for two teams, they can also enter the double league as Portishead United A and B and play against the Juniors team. At 11-a-side, the club can only enter one team per club name. Therefore, at 11-a-side you will not be permitted to have a Poritshead Juniors A and B team and will have to resort to Portishead United or other name depending if there is already a United team set up. The club has age groups that typically range from 15 to 40 players. For the Bristol Girls League teams are entered on an individual basis and therefore if more than one team is entered they should follow the same A and B format with each teams results and league position being separate. How many players can I have in a single team? At minisoccer level the club guideline is between 9 or 10 (7-a-side matches with subs). At 11-a-side its guideline is up to 16. This gives enough coverage for absentees but not so many as to give you substitution dilemmas when fully resourced. The Bristol Girls League change from 7-a-side to 11-a-side at aged under 13. Can I play older players in my age group? NO. This is absolutely forbidden by the club and by the FA. Can I play younger players in my age group? Typically, NO. The club wishes to encourage players to play within their own age group. If, however, there is an exceptional case, then this can be made to the Committee for consideration. By playing in the correct age group the club hopes to avoid discrimination for players failing to claim a place in their proper age group because they are prevented from doing so by a younger player. It helps encourage the development of same age players by playing with talented players of their own age. Can I play mixed girls and boys together? YES, up to Under 11s. However, if the club has a girls team for the appropriate age group then NO, the club would strongly prefer the players play with the appropriate same sex team. Should I stream players? This is at your discretion but the club recommends you do certainly from Under 10s upwards. It ensures the weaker players get lots of football and ensures the better players improve as quickly as everyone else. Should I train all the age group together? This is preferred whenever possible. The club wishes to encourage strong squad and club identities to enable smooth progression of players between teams at the end of each season. Enabling joint training, even on an occasional basis, assists these aims. What do I call my teams? They are normally A, B. However, some teams will name their teams as they wish for example Sharks, Tigers, Pirates. How do I manage multiple teams? Again, a choice for you as to how you want to manage. You could utilise an assistant manager to help or more than one if necessary - every manager will require a CRB check. Membership, Subscriptions, & Registrations When are player subscriptions/registrations due? Normally during August in preparation for the league registration. Currently it is early August. Check with the appropriate representative for your league to ensure you do not miss the date. Who collects club subscriptions? YOU. The club will issue a registration form and scale of subscriptions at the beginning of June to all existing Managers. They are asked to forward to their players and to return their form and subscription directly to their manager. There may be a registration day where children and parents are required to come along to a social event run by the club and register their children whilst there. This is still in the planning stage. Is there a separate league registration process? Each league will have its own process speak with the appropriate representative for more information (details in the appendix at the back of the booklet). Who manages the subscription and player registration process? You initially. Make sure that during this process that every player has completed a medical form and that this is regularly checked for accuracy from one year to the next at least. Who is responsible for completing my league player registrations? The clubs relevant league representative (see our website) sign off the forms. What happens if I fail to obtain all the necessary subscription and registration details? The player(s) concerned will not be registered to the club or for the league. They will not be allowed to play in any matches (competitive or friendly) nor participate in training. THE CLUB MAINTAINS INSURANCE FOR PLAYERS THAT ARE REGISTERED. IF AN ACCIDENT OCCURS INVOLVING A PLAYER WHO IS NOT REGISTERED IN LINE WITH CLUB RULES, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE MANAGER MAY BECOME PERSONALLY LIABLE. PLEASE THEREFORE TREAT THIS OF FUNDAMENTAL IMPORTANCE. What happens if I miss the clubs or the leagues registration deadlines? As above. Is there any flexibility? NO. You must never play a child in a league game that is not registered with that league. The club will suffer significant fines from the league, and could be penalised by the FA undermining everything the club stands for. You must also never play a player in a friendly or tournament who is not registered with the club, or allow them to regularly train. Not only is the clubs reputation challenged, as the child may already be registered with another club, but more importantly the safety of the other children is compromised. The club maintains an insurance policy that protects only those who are paid up members, plus the child in question through possible lack of qualified training could be a liability to others. Additionally, the club maintains a tight control on costs to ensure subscriptions are kept low whilst its investments are maximised. Allowing unregistered players to play cheapens the value of the registered members contributions and presents moral challenges that the club does not wish to support. What does the players annual club subscription include? All training equipment. Hire costs of winter training on the astro turf End of season player awards. Player insurance. Qualified managers/coaches. Weekly training or matches. Your time. Social event cost support. Infrastructure development cost support. Administrative cost support. Are there any other costs throughout the season? Yes match fees. Currently set at 2 per player per match. This is the only requirement! Depending on how you wish to raise funds for your team, you may arrange for parents (in agreement with them) to pay a monthly amount into your own individual team account. This could present dangers as records will need to be kept for scrutinising by the appropriate authorities. Having said that, most teams have their own accounts set up with various banks. Providing parents are happy, you can use this to purchase additional equipment not provided by the club, to arrange your own team excursions, fund your own team event (end of season party) etc. N.B. the club do not support this and you do this at YOUR own risk. When are match fees due? At each match. These fees are then payable to the club treasurer (currently Simon Appleby) at the clubs monthly managers meeting. How do I bring in a new player to the club? You can sign them pre-season or during the designated transfer window if they are already registered with a club. If not, they can join at any time. Can they train or play for the club before they are registered? NO! Can they play for another club? NO! Is there any information about the club I can give a potential new player or parent? YES. There is lots of information about the club on our official web site HYPERLINK "http://79.170.40.234/portisheadunited.org.uk/" http://79.170.40.234/portisheadunited.org.uk/ (soon to become HYPERLINK "http://www.portisheadjuniors.co.uk" www.portisheadjuniors.co.uk) Is there a specific catchment area within which registration is restricted? For league football, the children must live or go to school within North Somerset - not Bristol. What should I do if I am approached by a player interested in joining but not in my age group? Take their details and pass them on to the appropriate manager. A FURTHER REQUIREMENT IS THAT A MANAGER SHOULD KEEP A FULL RECORD OF ALL THE PLAYERS IN THE TEAM, INCLUDING CONTACT DETAILS AND THE GAMES IN WHICH THEY TOOK PART DURING THE SEASON THIS IS A LEAGUE REQUIREMENT, BUT MAKES GOOD SENSE FOR ALL AGES. Training What date does training start and finish? Whenever you choose. It is recommended that you start training two weeks before your first league match and finish a couple of weeks after your last. Typically the training season follows that of school terms. Does training stop for any periods during the season? This is entirely at your discretion but typically managers follow the dates of school terms, some resting during the holiday periods and some not. It is good for the children to have a break and try other sports too! What days does training take place? This is entirely at your discretion. How long are training sessions? This is at the managers discretion, but the FA advises to train for no more than 90mins. What time does training start? This is entirely at your discretion Where is training held? During the lighter evenings, training can be held at the Portishead Town ground, Bristol Road. When the evenings become darker, typically during the period from the end of British Summer Time, training moves to the floodlit astro turf at Gordano School. Will I always get a pitch? Your training slot will be there for you to train although you may need to move your time for training by an hour or day if too many teams wish to train at the same time. For matches, priority is always for league games before friendlies. As a new team and only playing friendly fixtures, you are advised to play mainly on a Sunday afternoon. Is this pitch allocated to me forever? For training yes, for matches - no. You will need to book the pitches with the nominated person. This person changes from season to season. You can contact the relevant person via the Book a pitch section of the Managers area on the website. What if I need another pitch? Contact the pitch booking nominated person. Where do I train in the Winter? Normally held on the Astro turf pitch at Gordano School. What Time & Day do I train in the winter? If possible, it would be easier to remain as close to your normal training day and time as possible. Be warned though, if you have a large number of children, space can be limited if you train at a popular time and day. When does Winter Training Start? When the clocks go back! When does it end? Surprise surprise, when the clocks go forward! What do I include in training sessions? This is entirely at the managers discretion. The club strongly recommends that you prepare your thoughts in advance of training so that you are organised and in control. A warm-up appropriate to your age group, followed by your chosen drills before finishing with a game or two would be the norm. In the useful tools appendix, you will find some useful places to look to find drills and plans for training of all age groups. Will the club support my personal development as a coach? YES. The club would like all managers to qualify for their FA Level 1 coaching badge. Training courses are regularly held at FA centres in the Somerset region. A formal request must be raised with the Club Secretary who will provide you with the necessary information. The club will fund this exercise. A recommendation from the FA is to take a look at the Age Appropriate courses available from the Somerset FA website. Can I enrol professional help with coaching? Yes. Please speak with the club chairman for advice. Leagues Who selects the league my team(s) is entered into? You will enter the Woodspring League or Bristol Girls League. Who decides which division my team(s) competes in? The league decide. Can I swap divisions? No. Where do I find my league match schedule? From your league representative - details of this person are found on the website When do I get my league match schedule? August When do the league seasons start? Early September When do the league seasons end? Normally early May. Where can I get a copy of the league rules and constitution? From your league representative. How many league matches will my team(s) play in? Depends on the number of teams that enter Are there cup matches as well? YES, typically. Depending on your success these will add another one to eight matches per team per season. Tournaments There are many tournaments hosted by clubs and professional organisations throughout the closed season. They prove a useful way of developing your players football, of challenging different teams from other areas, and an excellent way of trying out new team formations, new players, and new teams. Here are some guidelines for tournament participation. Must I enter tournaments? NO. It is entirely at your discretion. No expectation is set or expected. Who is responsible for entering my team(s) into tournaments? YOU. Where can I find information about tournaments? There is no official published list. Clubs and organisations hosting tournaments may send an invitation to the Club Secretary, who in turn will forward the details to all managers. Alternatively, managers may seek to find tournaments proactively themselves using, for example, the web. Who pays for tournament registrations? This cost is not covered by the club. Tournament fees must be collected from the parents. How many tournaments should I enter? This is again at your discretion, but the club would suggest you avoid entering more than four in total. More than this can become too much of a financial inconvenience for parents, plus an over extended football season can also become a logistical inconvenience for many. Does the club host any tournaments? YES One. How many teams can I enter for the clubs own tournaments? Typically just one. The club now encourage only one team to allow a wider variety of teams to enter. How many players make up a tournament team? Depends on the age group. Mini soccer (7, and 8 year olds) would normally allow you to enter 10 players to play 7-a-side with rolling subs for example. Under 9s are 9 players for 6-a-side. Lots of tournaments allow two teams from one club to enter. You will find the under 7s and 8s will be advertised as Festivals of Football as these are non-competitive. How do I accommodate all my players in tournaments? This is a matter for you again. You need to decide how you wish to approach the tournament to establish whether you are playing to win, or to allow everyone an opportunity to play. Does the club have a tournament it enters enmass or as an annual activity? No. Friendlies Who organises friendlies for my team(s)? YOU. How far in advance do I need to book friendlies? You should give yourself at least three or four weeks. This gives you enough chance to find an opposition team in time for them to schedule the match with their players and parents, and of course for you to do the same. Ideally, see if you can book them right at the start of the season and build them into your seasons full published schedule. Most teams book up during the summer months in preparation for the forthcoming season - some teams dont want to play friendly matches so if you do, get researching and phoning! Who can I play? Any team in the same age group. How can I find out who would like to play a friendly? Phoning! Dont be afraid to be proactive. Prior to league football, you can search for teams on the web or ask older group managers for team names they play to help your search. If all fails, get the managers details for another age group and ask them to help you get the correct manager to contact you. I have found that most local teams are not proactive but are happy to play. Dont sit back and rely on them to contact you! During the league age groups - It is likely you will receive a full contact list for all the teams in your league. It is worth considering playing some of those teams outside of your division. Do I charge match fees for friendlies? YES. Typically this is to cover the costs of pitch fees or a referee. Fees as normal How much should I charge? A match fee scale will be issued to all managers by the Management Committee at the start of each season. Currently set at 2 per match. Do friendlies follow the same rules as competitive matches? YES, typically. However, a conversation in advance with the opposition manager is worthwhile if you would like to try anything that requires some flexibility. Providing both managers are in agreement then this is generally acceptable. You can try playing 8-a-side instead of 7, and confirm the rules on allowing rolling subs. How many friendlies should I play? This entirely depends upon how many competitive matches you have and how much football you want to play. Some play every week, others once a month. Do I have to play any friendlies? NO, it is entirely at your discretion. Do I need to report the results of friendlies? NO, but it would be nice to have them covered on our web site. N.B. - PRIOR TO UNDER 9S, ALL MATCHES ARE FRIENDLIES ANYWAY. THESE ARE NOT PERMITTED TO BE ADVERTISED OR REPORTED IN THE PRESS OR ON A WEBSITE (INCLUDING OUR VERY OWN). THIS IS AN FA REQUIREMENT AND TO CONTRAVENE THIS COULD JEOPARDISE THE CLUBS CHARTER STANDARD STATUS. THEREFORE, DONT! Match Day Who informs parents and players of the seasons fixture list? You. Please make sure you do this well in advance. Whilst football is the most important thing in the world, there are some parents who do not place it at the centre of their lives. How do my players get to away matches? Parent power. It is advisable you ensure everyone knows where they are going, but it is not your responsibility to get them there. Some pitch details can be found on the club website. What do I need to take to away matches? Along with a full strength squad you must take all players medical forms, a first aid kit, and bibs. It is advisable to also take balls for warming up however you do not need more than 2 or 3. Kids unfortunately kick them around, and 2 hours later, you wont have the number you arrived with if you take too many. What do I need to provide for home matches? A full strength squad, player medical forms, a first aid kit, bibs (enough for your team to play in if there is a clash of kit colours), two goals, match ball, a spare ball and a referee. You need to mark out the pitch before every game too. Are there any rules that players must abide by with respect to kit and equipment? Shin guards must be worn at all times inside players socks. All watches, earrings and other dangerous objects must be removed before the start of a game. Who submits the results to the league? The club have a liaison to the league that YOU need to submit your weekend results too on the day of the game. This person changes from year to year so speak with the club secretary to find out who this person is. Are there match fees? YES. You must collect match fees from all players for every match. Can I referee matches? This is generally acceptable for Under 8s and below and for friendlies, but not for Under 9s and above in competition. As such you should always ensure you have a nominated referee available to you bear in mind the referee will need YOU to pay him from your match fees. The referees for all Bristol Girls Leagure matched must be qualified and proved their FAN numbers for the match result sheet. How long is each match? Under 7 to Under 10 - 40 minutes (2x20). Different ages have different times so check with your league handbook. Where do I find directions and details of away grounds? Usually by contacting the opposition team manager. This is your responsibility but many of the away grounds details are detailed on our web site. The club encourages you to help keep this information comprehensive and up to date. How strictly are the FAs football rules enforced? There is some leniency at Under 7s to Under 9s (for example foul throws), but after that they are enforced pretty much to the letter. Do yellow and red cards apply? YES, but only at Under 9s and above. Are there any forms of fines? YES, but typically only at Under 9s and above. These will vary from league to league but fines can be issued for discipline, games being cancelled, and failure to report results in time. Fines can be financial or points deductions. Worth noting is that you are marked by the referee and opposing team on the conduct of your parents, players and yourself. Therefore, ensure your parents know what is expected as it is often them that will let you, your team, and the club down. The FA code of conduct should be given to each parent and player (and coach) at the start of each season to remind them all of what is acceptable, and more importantly, what is not! What is expected from me on match day? Difficult! For home fixtures, it is YOUR job to make sure the pitch is marked out each and every time you play, that the pitch is free from dangers (broken bottles and poo to name but two). Goals need assembling and corner flags placing in position. It is useful to collect all the childrens water bottles from them before the start of the game so that they dont disappear at half time resulting in you losing valuable coaching time with them. Make sure you welcome the opposition manager and referee and show them where the toilets are. Enjoy the game and ensure it is played in the correct spirit (parents, players, coaches). Accept all decisions of the referee. Remember, the referee is also learning and is not there to be abused. They arent paid much and you wouldnt let a parent abuse one of your kids, so dont stand for it if it is directed at the referee. In addition to managing the team, you need to also keep track of match stats. These include score (sometimes difficult in high scoring matches), appearances, scorers, clean sheets, player of the match. Memorable moments if there are any. You may find entering these onto a computer will help in the long run. You should obtain a Player of the match trophy for each team - but make sure it is returned each week otherwise this will become expensive. Children like to take these trophies to school to show friends and teachers so they should be allowed to take it away from the match. At the end of the game, thank the opposition manager and referee, and ensure the referee is happy. Make sure he/she is paid within 15 minutes of the final whistle. Collect up all your equipment, complete your results card if appropriate and expenses/payment slip. The latter is downloadable from our website. Communication Clear and regular communication is probably one of the most important activities a manager must undertake. Stakeholders in your communication plan include players, parents, opposition managers, and the clubs Management Committee. Who sends out information to parents? YOU. Most information will be passed to you directly and the club expects all managers to pass appropriate information on to parents and players in a prompt fashion. What information needs to be distributed? This varies, but includes details of up and coming fixtures, training, club social events, club announcements, and any other information you feel important for people to receive. If you are able to set out a whole seasons schedule in advance (including all match dates, training dates, and other important club dates) then you will save yourself and parents a good deal of time in the long run. It may help you to find a willing parent who can be nominated to deal with arranging your fixtures (decide what frequency of games/month you want first), and for your social events both that the club have, and that you arrange yourselves if you wish. What medium should be used for communications? All players and parents email addresses and telephone numbers are collected upon registration. Phone/text messaging can be costly over a season. Decide on a general medium and stick to it. Email is my preferred option with a phone call for more urgent matters such as game cancellations. The email addresses and telephone numbers of opposition managers can also be obtained from the clubs appropriate league representative. How often should information be sent out? As often as required. People will get used to receiving necessary information by whatever means you decide. If you keep changing your medium, people will not know what to expect and important information could be missed. How do I best communicate the success of my squad to the club? You can email the club secretary/chairman and have the information put onto the club website (under 9s and above!). We may shortly be able to update our own page of the website ourselves so watch this space. How do I receive information? The club will regularly distribute information to all managers by email, including minutes of certain Management Committee meetings. You may also receive email communication directly from your league and directly from other managers and Management Committee members. Also, pay a regular visit to our web site for other important club announcements. Should I attend Management Committee Meetings? The Management Committee meets on a monthly basis and requires managers to attend or send a replacement. Is there any other meeting or event I need to attend? YES: League Awards Ceremony Annual Awards Ceremony Annual General Meeting Do I need to do anything for these other meetings? Nominations for awards will be requested in time by the club in preparation for the Annual awards ceremony.
