Stoke wins top award from RFU panel - Seal of Approval Club of the Year 2010 - Press Release Stoke-on-Trent Rugby Club has been judged to be one of the leading Rugby Union clubs in the country by winning special regional recognition among clubs who have earned the Rugby Football Unions prestigious Seal of Approval award. The Seal of Approval initiative, which ensures that players coming into the game benefit from the very best support systems that clubs can provide, acts as both a quality kitemark and a barometer of the high standards of care young people can expect from a club. But even within the clubs who reach the highest levels of administration and structure which the SoA template demands, there are clubs who have gone the extra yard in reaching the required standards and whose submissions stand out, even in an area where excellence is the norm. Stoke-on-Trent RUFC is just such a club and as a result has been voted Staffordshire and Midlands West Regional winner by the RFU Community Rugby department. Says Andy Lees, the National Clubs Development Manager: Every club which achieves Seal of Approval status and this year Clevedon RFC became the 500th of 831 clubs in the RFU to acquire Mini & Youth accreditation deserves a huge pat on the back for reaching the very high standards demanded by the process. The Whole Club Seal of Approval accreditation, which assesses every aspect of a clubs infrastructure and was introduced last year, is an even more challenging benchmark, but across the game clubs are signing up to both disciplines and putting in place procedures and programmes that deliver the highest levels of safety and support to anyone joining a rugby union club. The clubs we are acknowledging with these National, Regional and Constituent Body Awards are the best of the best and Im proud to say that in rugby union, we really are dealing with some exceptional groups of people. There is clearly such a group of dedicated, hard-working rugby folk at Stoke-on-Trent RUFC and they deserve recognition for reaching the high standards in place at the club. Regional and Constituent Body winners were: Clacton (London North & Essex); Chobham (London South & Surrey); Ashby (Midlands East & Leicestershire); Stoke on Trent (Midlands West & Staffordshire); Driffield (NE & Yorkshire); Keswick (NW & Cumbria); Banbury (South & Oxfordshire); Weymouth (South West & Dorset & Wilts). CB winners were: Eastern Counties Colchester; Hertfordshire - Old Albanian; Middlesex Grasshoppers; Kent Sidcup; Notts, Lincs & Derby Paviors; Durham Horden; Northumberland Blyth; Cheshire Lymm; Lancashire Fylde; Berkshire Maidenhead; Somerset Yatton. HYPERLINK "http://www.stokerugbyclub.co.uk/html/default.htm" HYPERLINK "http://www.stokerugbyclub.co.uk/html/default.htm" Seniors The First XV has had a very difficult season resulting in a disappointing 12th position in Midlands 1 West (Level 6). This should mean relegation to Level 7, but this is as yet unconfirmed; we shall see. Whether or not relegated, the season has been one of underachievement, mainly due to inadequate preparation and practice. These lessons have been learned by all concerned and 2010/11 will be different. Despite this gloomy rsum, there have been some significant highs during the season, not least of which have been the introduction/debuts of a number of players to 1st XV ranks and the continuing development of our younger players who have come through our Mini/Junior system. Everyone involved with the 1st XV is convinced that growing our own is the right way forward and we will concentrate our efforts on developing a nucleus of Stoke players for the future. As the final game was played out and a decent victory over Linley was secured, the Saracens and Rhinos both found themselves in mid-table positions. Players, captains and coaches, from both teams, would have liked to have been fighting for a top three finish, an aim that during the pre-season did not seem so unlikely. However, given the turn of events throughout the season it has become apparent that the club requires a greater depth to its senior squad. Which we hope to address in the coming 2010/2011 season. HYPERLINK "http://www.stokerugbyclub.co.uk/html/default.htm" HYPERLINK "http://www.stokerugbyclub.co.uk/html/default.htm" Success is not solely measured by victory and points but also by the development and enjoyment of the game for all players involved within the club. This season has seen the development and progression of several senior players; it is here that the club has achieved its targets. Excellent performances from the likes of Eddie Cheadle, Bobby Cheadle, James Armstrong, Gavin Derbyshire and Ben Buckton have seen call ups to the Senior First XV, providing invaluable experience to the Stoke youngsters who will surely find themselves having a bigger part to play in the future season. Furthermore, the significant personal development and integration of players such as Dave Webb, Oliver Palfreyman, Steve Durose and Andrew Woolridge have enhanced the team spirit, depth and talents to the senior squad. This is where we must continue to develop and improve and I thank all of those players who have welcomed, educated, inspired and advised these players in constructive ways, it is these actions that define a club and show the spirit within it. A stark reminder of the importance of a healthy senior playing squad is the number of players that found their feet within the Saracens/Rhinos team before forcing their way into the First XV, this level of competition is imperative to the success of the club, such players include: Zac Heath Pete Wilshaw Jordan Grimshaw Simon Harrison Mitch Hulme Ben Buckton Gavin Derbyshire Roger Weston Dave Rathbone Bobby Cheadle Eddie Cheadle James Armstrong Michael Preece Phil McPherson Rich Brown and Rob Spruce Finally, a huge thank you not only to each player but also the supporters, friends and family alike, for all your efforts throughout a long season! Through both difficult and elated times, the unwavering commitment is a compliment to you and we at the club really appreciate all you do. Long may this continue, and may we build our future success upon the foundations of enjoyable, committed and structured rugby. Minis and Juniors Under 7s This newly formed team continues to attract new members and we are delighted to announce that Sean and Charly Bailey will coach and manage the team going forward. The team are enjoying new adventures as they visit other clubs for fixtures and festivals. The only disappointment is that the season draws to a close just as the team get going and are ready to win some matches. We expect great things from our littlest players in blue. We are also keen to recruit new players for next season so please spread the word. Under 8s After the disruption caused by the bad weather we got to the County Cup at Wolverhampton with only having played a few matches in 2010. This is the first time we had entered a festival with a nearly full team available. We won our first game against Wednesbury before coming up against a very strong Wolverhampton team, the boys played their hearts out and were very, very unlucky to lose. After winning their next game against Leek the boys worked out that due to there being no semi finals they could not qualify for the final. The boys then had to play their last pool match against great rivals Trentham, this proved very difficult in the circumstances and unfortunately Trentham will hold the bragging rights until next season. HYPERLINK "http://www.stokerugbyclub.co.uk/html/default.htm" HYPERLINK "http://www.stokerugbyclub.co.uk/html/default.htm" One week later and the boys were ready for the Stoke Festival with a point to prove and didnt they just prove it in style. They won their first 2 matches against Winnington and Burton B before coming up against Burton A, who had also won their first 2 matches, so everything rested on this game. In the 15 minutes of the match the boys produced their best rugby of the year against a team who we had played 6 matches against during the season with the match score standing 3-3. Burton also produced their best rugby of the season and a thrilling match ended 7 all. The festival rules stated that in this situation the winner would be the team that had scored the most trys on the day and Stoke took the Trophy by a narrow margin. This has been quite a year for the boys their effort is amazing, they are all good friends and are bursting to take on the challenge of full contact next season. Under 9s After two great fixtures against a tough Macclesfield team (losing 20-15 away and winning 20-0 at home) we then played Crewe and Nantwich at home and won 55-5. We went to the County Festival in great form. Our first 2 games, against Tamworth and Stafford B, were stopped early as we had reached the try count limit of 7 tries. We then played our good friends from Burton and after a scoreless first half the boys came through to win 15-0. This left just Lichfield to play for a place in the final. We beat Lichfield 20-0 to book our place in the final against Newcastle, who we beat in the Under 8s final last year, so we new that they would be up for this game. It was a tough game but we ran out winners 15-5, so in total we scored 24 tries and only conceded 1 on the day. A great performance. Next was the Stoke Festival. First we played Congleton and won 25-0. We then played Burton and won 15-0. Next up was Bromsgrove - this was a tough match and great to watch. We won 10-0. This just left Bromsgroves B team to play and they proved to be just as tough as the A team, though we won this game 15-0 to win the Stoke Festival overall. The boys have played some fantastic rugby and also kept calm in tough games where they just had to keep hold of the ball and wear the other team down. It has been a great season for us - we entered 4 festivals winning Coalville, The County and Stoke and being runners-up at Mold losing to Lymm by 2 tries to 1.We have played 32 games in total and lost only 2. In the first 8 games no-one had scored any tries against us and we had another 10 games during the season were no-one crossed our line. I would like to thank the parents for all their help and support throughout the season - they are a great bunch. Under 10s the season may be described as almost there. The squad got to the final of the Coalville tournament at the start of the season but were just pipped by a strong Nottingham side. Then a great day (if not a little wet), at Hartwell Lane saw the boys beat all-comers to qualify for the Prima Tiger Cup Quarter-finals at Welford Road. Here they met a very strong Old Silhillians side who would go on to win the competition. In the County Championship Festival the boys went out in the semis and at the Stoke Festival they lost out in the final to Bromsgrove. The squad are looking to increase their numbers next season so please get your son down to the club and join this age-group. Under 11s have seen squad numbers increase by 30% this year and we used the first half of the season to give all players game-time. The latter part of the season saw the games intensify in terms of importance as we counted down towards the festivals. The squad went to Oakham RUFC to compete in the Land Rover Cup for the first time. We lost just once on the day and we shall target this event next year as one of our objectives to win. The following week Stoke hosted the Under 11s County Championship and played magnificent rugby, ending up unbeaten and conceding only one try all day. The squad drew the final 7-7 with Burton but lost out on the first try scored rule. It was a tough one to take but the lads moved on to the Anglo-Welsh Festival the week after. HYPERLINK "http://www.stokerugbyclub.co.uk/html/default.htm" HYPERLINK "http://www.stokerugbyclub.co.uk/html/default.htm" The rugby they played on the day was outstanding with lethal back play and very tough defence. The team swept good opposition away in their march to the final against Wrexham. From the kick-off in the final we knew that it was to be our day as all the training paid off and we scored within 10 seconds from a perfectly executed kick-off and chase. The final was won 12-7 and the lads made it 4 wins in succession at Welsh Festivals and are now unbeaten in Wales since 2007. It has been a pleasure to see the skills and confidence of the players grow throughout the season well done guys. Under 12s Overall the under 12s season has been one of success on a number of levels. The squad has continued to add new players and all members of the team have added to their skills and capabilities during the season, while maintaining an intensity about their play that is quiet scary in 12 year olds!! The end of the season is defined by the Oakham, Staffordshire and Stoke festivals, all of which could be described as hugely successful for the Under 12s. At Oakham, despite the team losing to Nottingham in the pool stages and not progressing to the semi final, they did beat two good sides and played some wonderful expansive rugby. It was also good to see the manner in which the lads conducted themselves throughout and remaining to watch the final. The Staffordshire festival was an emotionally charged affair as the team secured a tie in the final, sharing the trophy with Stafford and thus winning it for all 6 years in the mini age groups. A truly outstanding achievement and a credit to all the players and coaches. The Stoke festival was an opportunity for players who have not had much game time to play some regular rugby. The performance was again excellent with the team growing in confidence as the day progressed and producing an excellent standard of rugby. All in all, a successful season to conclude the Mini stage of the teams development and they move into the junior section with enthusiasm as they tackle a full size pitch. Fitness training in the summer will be something to look forward to! Under 13s Following the victory in the Staffordshire Shield Final the remainder of the season has been fairly low key, with emphasis on developing the squad and having some fun. The highlight of this period was the inaugural Stoke 10s tournament. Several teams dropped out at the last minute, leaving a triangular fixture between ourselves, Newcastle and Rhyl. With a depleted squad, yes even for ten a side, and a totally new format we were all very much in unknown water. The fixture was took place with a great atmosphere and the whole squad produced a great effort and some truly wonderful open rugby. They won all their games, easily, and didnt concede a single point. The second bit of Silverware of the season and a fantastic way to end a very good season. We now look towards next season in far better shape than we were twelve months ago. We already have a good sized squad of talented rugby players, interest from a number of potential new players, the support of a great group of parents, the prospect of a new forwards coach and the oldcoaches looking to develop the squad into contenders for the Staffs Cup next season. The future really does look bright. Thanks to everyone who has helped make this season such a success. Under 14s have had a fantastic season becoming Staffordshire County Cup winners and have a 100% record for the season 17 wins from 17! Our level of rugby this season has been superb with our only real test being the last minute semi-final win against Burton and that was caused mainly by complacency on our part. Every other game this season has been won as soon as we stepped onto the pitch, although we do like to give the opposition a head start so that they at least think they can win for the first quarter before we decide to start playing! HYPERLINK "http://www.stokerugbyclub.co.uk/html/default.htm" HYPERLINK "http://www.stokerugbyclub.co.uk/html/default.htm" Our tour of Scarborough was brilliant in every aspect bar the quality of the opposition with wins of 59-0 against Malton & Norton and 67-0 against Scarborough. As for the normal tour indiscretions and shenanigans we used to say what goes on tour stays on tour but in this age of technology its what goes on tour appears on facebook. The quality of our players has been recognised by Staffs RFU with 8 boys retained for County Under 15s and 5 boys in EPDG. Looking forward we need to develop our game by finding tougher fixtures, replacing the 60 point wins and opposition no shows with more competitive games even though that means travelling further afield. Well done to all the players, parents and supporters and especially to Nick and Craig for the excellent coaching. Under 15s have played strongly this season with the squad getting to their first County Cup Final game. On the day the lads just fell short but can be proud of their efforts this season. Colts In the March Newsletter we reported that the League fixtures had been completed and that the Senior Colts were focussing on the Cup Competitions. Playing in the Senior Plate Competition our first round fixture was away to Kendal Senior Colts. Unfortunately on the day we were only able to muster 12 players prepared or able to make the 220 mile & 4+ hours round trip. It was hardly surprising that we were on the wrong side of a 12 0 score line. Having lost in the first round of the Plate we were relegated to the Senior Shield. In the first round of the Shield on 28th March, Stoke entertained Crewe & Nantwich at Hartwell Lane. This performance was reminiscent of the performances that were a week in-week out occurrence during the 2008/09 season. The players were determined and focussed and played as one, ably supported by players from the Junior colts whose season had by then come to an end. Against a strong Crewe & Nantwich Pack our forwards were dominant and by the third quarter of the game there was only going to be one winner. The final score Stoke 15 Crewe & Nantwich 7. The following game on the 11thApril was away to Ellesmere Port. The result was never in doubt as Stoke proved to be much the superior side in all departments. The final score was Ellesmere Port 0 Stoke-on-Trent 34. As in the previous season Finals Day was to be held at Sandbach RUFC. Our opponents in the Shield Final were Eccles and as was anticipated this proved to be a close encounter made even more difficult for Stoke by a number of poor and inconsistent refereeing decisions. At full time the final score was 8-8 with both teams having scored one try each. Under the rules of the competition a 5 penalty shoot out followed;- at the end of which both Stoke and Eccles had scored 4 conversions. After Stokes successful first sudden death kick the corresponding kick by Eccles hit the crossbar and failed to go over. Result - VICTORY for Stoke. Although it was not the best way to decide the result there would be few present who would disagree that Stoke were the better team on the day. The 2009/2010 season has proved to be a long and difficult campaign and it is good to be able to report a successful conclusion and rewarding the small nucleus of players who have worked hard and demonstrated commitment throughout. A number of the Junior colts made contributions to this achievement and we all now look forward to greater success in the 2010/2011 campaign. HYPERLINK "http://www.stokerugbyclub.co.uk/html/default.htm" HYPERLINK "http://www.stokerugbyclub.co.uk/html/default.htm" Referee development Congratulations to Phil Paddock, Mike Smith, Josh Handley, Joe Downward, Sam Keeling and Matt Hubbart who all undertook and passed the ELRA refereeing Level 1&2 courses held at Stoke. This increases the number of qualified referees within the club. The guys cut their teeth at the Stoke Festival and had very good feedback. Well done guys. Many thanks also to Tim Handley who is leading the refereeing development at Stoke with his usual gusto. Dates for your diary The Players Dinner will be held on Friday the 7th May from 7pm. Club shop the club shop has had a somewhat intermittent year, with the new stock arriving quite late in the season and the weather interrupting the amount of Sundays when teams were at home. That said, we now have a full range of clothing available and we will be opening the online club shop from the end of May to mid June. All orders placed during that time will be delivered by the start of the new season. If there are any urgent needs please email David Boughey on (HYPERLINK "mailto:david.boughey@haywardtyler.com"david.boughey@haywardtyler.com). In preparation for next season, we are looking for a volunteer to open the shop on a Saturday to target the senior members who do not make it on a Sunday morning please contact David or Sarah if interested. The Mini & Midi Festival - Over 20 teams from Staffordshire, the Midlands and South Cheshire attended the rugby festival covering age groups Under 7 through to Under 12. The festival, an annual event at the club, was attended by more than 250 children all of whom were a credit to the clubs they represented. As with previous years, the festival was organised along "fun lines" rather than a win at all costs approach and I am delighted to say all teams approached it in the same manner. I was particularly pleased with the very positive comments I received about the refereeing (received no comments about my (Mr Bougheys) cooking!!) and the general organisation. HYPERLINK "http://www.stokerugbyclub.co.uk/html/default.htm" HYPERLINK "http://www.stokerugbyclub.co.uk/html/default.htm" All Stoke teams acquitted themselves well with U8s, and U9s winning and the U10s losing in a close fought final. In particular it was great to see the Under 7 team playing some good rugby and smiling! In addition to the usual stuff going on (BBQ, bar, soak the coach etc) the festival was also supported by Sacla Italia and had the opportunity of selecting a player to go to Twickenham for coaching with Lawrence Dallaglio. Despite suffering extreme pressure from parents (particularly Mums!!) to pick them we stuck to the organisers guidelines and selected Tim Goring, an under 12 player from Burton. All in all, a great day, capped off by several parents from visiting teams telling me what a great day they had and their desire to come again. Finally, thanks to all those who helped before and during the day. You certainly made it a day for Stoke to be proud of. Senior Ladies Team Stoke is well into the process of forming a ladies senior team. Foundations for a female team have been laid, and currently we are openly recruiting. Mandy Harp, of Staffordshire University, has been pivotal in spreading the word and organising a series of presentations to local businesses and groups. We need much, much more help during the recruitment and planning of this significant change, which will hopefully lead to huge benefits for all involved at Stoke. Please do your bit and look to recruit. If you have any ideas or suggestions please speak to either Matt Derbyshire or Mandy Harp and email stokerfuladies@gmail.com Finally we would like to say thank you to all of our sponsors for their continuing support.
