However when playing either contact or non-contact rugby or even watching from the sidelines, this risk can never be ruled out completely and therefore it is important to have a procedure in place so that all the club trainers, officers and other members know what action to take in the event of an injury. These procedures are written in conjunction with, and shall be carried out in accordance with the Club and Rugby Football Union Child Protection Policy HYPERLINK "http://www.rfu.com/PDFs/ChildProtection/CPPolicyText.pdf" http://www.rfu.com/PDFs/ChildProtection/CPPolicyText.pdf and, Policy on reporting Rugby Injuries HYPERLINK "http://www.rfu.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/RFUHome.WebSite_Listing/StoryTypeId/78/SectionId/402" http://www.rfu.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/RFUHome.WebSite_Listing/StoryTypeId/78/SectionId/402 Pre-session checks Currently the club has a number of first aiders across the various age groups and adult teams with one first aid kit being allocated per group. Before any training session or match the lead coach and or manager, must ensure that they have a working mobile phone, access to barrier and gate keys (same key as changing room front door) and a qualified first aider with a complete first aid kit is present. It is the responsibility of the manager to hold and share any pertinent medical information such as allergies, asthma etc, with the relevant first aiders and coaches. Initial Assessment In the event of an injury to a player, spectator or other person attending the Club session, the attending First Aider shall be immediately informed. They shall be responsible for actions taken and decisions made. Where a qualified First Aider is not present, the most senior Club Officer shall be responsible for the actions taken. Hereafter the First Aider or Senior Club member shall be referred to as the responsible officer Next Steps Following the initial assessment the first Aider may take one of 2 actions; Minor Injuries Major injuries Minor Injuries The First Aider will treat minor injuries as appropriate, where possible in the presence of the responsible adult if a child is injured. In the event of injuries that require the use of First Aid equipment i.e. plasters, bandages etc. such details shall be recorded in the accident book. Major Injuries If the First Aider determines that the injuries require further, professional assistance they shall arrange for the injured party to be transferred to hospital this may be either by private vehicle or by ambulance depending on the First Aiders risk assessment An Ambulance will always be called if; The First Aider deems it necessary, or The injured party is a child whose parents are not present The First Aider is not present and most senior Club officer deems it necessary. Calling the Ambulance The Responsible Officer, or someone delegated by them to do so shall call the Ambulance service using the 999 Service. As there are no fixed line telephones within the immediate vicinity this should be done by mobile phone however, if no mobile is available 2 club members shall go to the nearest house which is in Tongham Road (behind the changing rooms) returning as soon as possible to inform the Responsible Officer of the estimated time of arrival of the ambulance. In case of an Emergency ambulance callout our location is:- Aldershot Park End of Heron Wood Road (Off) Tongham Road (Off) Lower Farnham Road (B3208) Aldershot Hants Near Gu12 4BH NB:- A tall person with the changing room keys (the front door key will open all the gates including the over head barriers and are held by a number of lead coaches and club staff), plus preferably a phone and high-vis vest, should first open the scaffold bar gate next to the changing rooms and then be sent to meet the ambulance at bottom of Heron Wood Road; where the over head barrier needs opening! Another person should be sent to the bottom of Guildford Rd in case the ambulance turns up there, and depending on the state of access to the field decide if they need to redirect the ambulance to the Heronwood entrance or open the Guildford road entrances. Accompanying the Casualty If the casualty is an adult, or a child with a responsible adult, there is no requirement for a Club Officer to accompany the casualty to hospital, although a Club officer may be asked to get in touch with a home contact if requested. In the casualty is a child, a Club Officer must accompany the child to hospital and the Childs next of kin (as notified on the Club membership record) notified immediately or as soon as is practicable. Notification of Injuries All injuries must be logged in the Club accident book, either by the First Aider or if not possible (e.g. because they have gone to the hospital) by a Club Official. In addition, the following injuries shall also be reported to the Sports Injury Administrator (SIA), Any head or neck injury that requires a player to be transported directly from the ground to an Accident & Emergency Dept. Any injury that results in admission to a hospital as an inpatient after the game / training has finished and is game / training related. Note: These admissions might happen immediately after the game or sometime later if surgery is subsequently required. There is no need to include attendance at A&E for reasons other than acute head or neck injuries (see previous category) or attendances at hospital outpatient clinics. Any injury that prevents a player from playing or training for a period of 8 weeks or longer. Deaths, which occur during a game or within 6 hours of the game finishing. Note: Deaths that occur within 6 hours of a game finishing or where the post mortem shows the cause of death was linked to some aspect of the game should be reported to the SIA by the nominated club official within 48 hours of the death or cause being determined. Reporting Injuries to the SIA The Nominated Club Official (First Aider? Chair? ) shall inform the Sports Injuries Administrator (SIA) using the appropriate form (attached) within 48 hours of the incident. The SIA can be contacted Via E-mail, phone or fax (see below).
