Beccles put in a superb performance and won by 25 points to 13. Beccles and Finchley both won promotion to their respective sections of London Division 4 last season. This was going to be a good benchmark for the coming season for the Bulls. They travelled with a strong squad for Rix's full debut as captain. Finchley started well and a mistake in a defensive lineout led to them going in to the lead with a converted try. Beccles came back in to the game after this with Payne and Arnold both kicking well for position. Beccles were soon back level after a try from Thomas. The forwards set up a good driving maul and Thomas was guided over the line for the touchdown. Finchley began to spread the ball wide but good tackling from the back three of Cracknell, Harris and Gedney kept them from scoring. Beccles continued to dominate territory and the pressure finally told. A jinking run from Arnold got in behind the Finchley defence and he fed Wade who coasted over for the try. The Beccles pack was controlling the set piece with Danny Rix and Ling dominating their opposite number. Giddens was stealing ball well in the lineout. The Bulls created a couple of penalty chances before half time but these were both missed and the halftime score was 7-12. Beccles got on top at the start of the second half, Rix and Hinsley were winning a lot of ball at the breakdown and Sale was distributing the ball well from scrumhalf. Wade added two penalties but Finchley replied with two of their own. The home side began to up their game and put Beccles under pressure. The Beccles defence was as strong as ever. One clear cut chance for Finchley was thwarted by strong tackling from Holtzer, Johnstone and Lake. Beccles absorbed the pressure well and were able to break out from defence. Finchley had a scrum close to their own line and a strong hit from the Beccles front row won them a penalty. Sale took it quickly and fed Thomas. He powered through a couple of tackles and touched down for his second try. For his two tries and a good all round performance Thomas was made the White Horse Man of the Match. Wade added the conversion to make the final score 13-25. This was a moral boosting victory for Beccles who have always struggled to win on their travels at this level. They will be hoping to continue this good away form when they travel to Wisbeach on Saturday for the first league game. 23rd SEPTEMBER WISBECH 10 - BECCLES 16 Beccles Bulls got off to a winning start in London Division 4 North East. They travelled to Wisbech and put in an excellent performance to win by 16 points to 10. Last time Beccles were in this league they won one away game in three seasons so this was a superb win against a side that finished 3rd in the division last year. The game started with the home team creating the scoring chances. The Beccles defence was solid and twenty minute of pressure lead to only one penalty kick scored against them. Beccles started to come in to the game a bit more and were the first team to score a try. After some scrappy play near the Wisbech try line the ball flew loose and Ling was on hand to crash over and score. Soon after this Wade added a penalty to make the half time score 3-8. The second half was very tight with both teams creating chances. Beccles were held up over the line on three separate occasions. Wisbeach were the first team to score. They scored a converted try to go in to the lead. Beccles were soon back in front. A charge down by Wilson after the restart put Wisbech under pressure. Rix picked up the ball and powered over in the corner. Wisbech now came back strongly. Hinsley lead the Beccles defence and was made the White Horse Man of the Match as he made tackle after tackle, ensuring that the opposition didnt add to their score. Beccles managed to play their way out of defence and were able to score again themselves. Payne received the ball on the twenty-two and struck a sweet dropkick that sailed between the posts. Wisbeach were still within a converted try but Beccles held out and the match finished 10-16. Next week Beccles travel to Saffron Walden to carry on their superb start in the league. The week after they have drawn Barnet Elizabethans in the cup at home so all supporters would be welcomed (KO 3:00PM). 30th SEPTEMBER SAFFRON WALDEN 33 BECCLES 14 Beccles couldnt make it three away wins in a row when they travelled to Saffron Walden. Despite a superb first half they fell away in the second half and lost the match 33-14. The Bulls new they would be in for a tough game against opponents relegated from London Division 3 last year and favourites to go back up after a sixty point win the previous week. Rix had everybody available for selection so Beccles travelled with a strong squad. Saffron Walden were quickly ahead with a well worked try scored under the posts. After this Beccles began to take charge. They won a penalty close to the opponents try line and Ling set up a rolling maul and the rest of the Beccles pack put the drive on. Thomas controlled the ball at the back of the maul and was able to squeeze over for the try. Wade added a superb conversion. Beccles kept the pressure on and restricted the amount of ball the opposition had. Just before half time the pressure finally told and Beccles scored another try. Some slick passing along the backline left Gedney free to show his pace and touch down in the corner. Wade then bettered his first kick with a strike from right on the touchline. For his excellent kicking and some good passing Wade was made the White Horse man of the match. The whistle then sounded for half time with Beccles leading 7-14. The second half didnt go as well for the Bulls. Saffron Walden quickly scored an unconverted try and then a converted one to go in to 19-14 lead. Beccles tried hard to get back in to the game but couldnt get out of their half for any length of time. As Beccles pushed for a score gaps opened up and Saffron Walden were able to add two more tries to make the final score 33-14. After leading at half time Beccles were disappointed to lose this game but they can take heart from the fact, for the first half at least, they dominated one of the best teams in the league on their own ground. This week Beccles play in the EDF Energy Cup against Barnet Elizabethans. This will be the Bulls first home game of the season so as many supporters as possible would be welcomed (KO 3.00PM). 7th OCTOBER BECCLES 17-15 BARNET ELIZABETHANS Beccles Bulls continued their progress in the EDF Energy Senior Cup with a win over Barnet Elizabethans at Beef Meadow. After a superb first half performance they hung on in the second half to win by 17 15. Rix made a number of changes from the side that played the previous week. Townsend was recalled at hooker after an eight year absence from the first team. Porter replaced Hinsley at flanker and Wilson and Maeer were on the bench. Barnet were relegated from London Division 3 last year so Beccles knew they were in for a tough match and would have to start well. They did this and they soon went in to lead with a penalty from Wade. Beccles kept the pressure on and started creating scoring chances. The first Beccles try was a good combination of forward and back play. From a line-out Beccles set up a rolling maul which took them within five yards of the line. The ball went out to the backs; Harris ran an excellent line from full back and was picked out by Payne. He sliced through the defence and dived over under the posts. Wade added the conversion. Arnold, the White Horse man of the match, was kicking well and pinning the opposition back in their 22. Just before half time Beccles added another try. The opposition defence was getting stretched and Wade received the ball out wide and powered his way over the line. He converted his own try to make the score 17-0 at half time. After an excellent first half the Bulls again performed poorly in the second half. Barnet came back in to the game and scored three tries, all unconverted, to bring the score back to 17-15. The last of these tries came with five minutes left to go. The Bulls kept possession well and were able to run down the clock in their opponents half and hold on for the victory. Beccles are at home again next week when they are back in league action against Basildon (KO 3:00PM) 14th OCTOBER BECCLES 18-17 BASILDON Beccles won their first home league game of the season with a last play try from Maeer. Beccles came from behind against a physical Basildon side to win by 18 -17. Injuries and unavailability meant that Beccles went in to the match with a number of changes. Moon, Giddings and Hall were brought in to the side. The first twenty minutes were very tight with neither side being able to dominate. Beccles were doing well in the set piece; Danny Rix was scrummaging well against a strong opponent. Basildon were the first team on the score sheet when there winger scored under the posts after exploiting an overlap out wide. This was the only score of the first half and the halftime score was 0-7. Beccles began to pressure the Basildon line in the second half and were rewarded with a penalty from Wade. Basildon came back and scored an unconverted try. There was twenty minutes to go and Beccles were nine points down. Beccles camped themselves in the Basildon half and were the next on the score sheet. A good take in the lineout by White Horse man of the Match Hinsley was driven on by the Beccles pack. Thomas controlled the ball at the back of the maul and touched down for his sixth try of the season. Beccles looked to be in with a good chance of taken the lead but Basildon had other ideas. First Thomas was sin binned, then Basildon put pressure on the weakened Beccles scrum which left the No.8 free to crash over for an unconverted try. With some vocal home support cheering them on Beccles upped their efforts to try and get back in the game. They managed a penalty from Wade to bring them to within six points. With time up Beccles needed to keep the ball alive. They did this well and got close to the Basildon line. The ball went wide and Harris did well to hold on to a loose pass but was stopped just short of the line. With players lining up outside it looked a certain try. Maeer didnt need any help though and he picked the ball up from the base of the ruck and squeezed over for the try. It was then left to Wade to slot the high pressure conversion to win the game. 21st OCTOBER BECCLES BULLS 11-10 UPMINSTER Beccles pulled off a superb win over second in the table Upminster at Beef Meadow on Saturday. Beccles held on, despite a late surge from their promotion chasing opponents, to win by 11-10 in a tense finish. Rix made a few changes from the last league outing. Danny Rix started at prop and Hadridge played at inside centre. The match started in perfect rugby conditions and Beccles were the quickest out of the blocks. The Bulls battered the opposition try line with a number of powerful attacks. The Upminster defence was getting more and more desperate and they were giving away a lot of penalties to keep the Bulls out. In the end the pressure was too much and Thomas was able to crash over for a try. The conversion was missed by Wade. Upminster put on some pressure of their own after this but the first up tackling of Beccles was superb and they could not find a way through. Beccles managed to break out of their own half and won a penalty and Wade was able to make it 8-0. Beccles nearly made it to half time without conceding. However, Upminster worked a try in the corner to give a half time score of 8-5. Beccles started the second half well and some good driving play by the forwards led to another penalty opportunity for Wade. He converted to stretch the Beccles lead. It was do or die time for Upminster and they stepped up their attacking efforts. They found the Beccles defence in an unforgiving mood and could not break them down. White Horse man of the Match Sale was playing well and put in some pressure relieving kicks. With ten minutes remaining Upminster forced their try in the corner. Beccles hearts were in their mouths as the conversion attempt hit the post to leave Beccles one point in front. Beccles cranked up their defence to keep Upminster at bay. Hinsley kept steeling lineout ball and Beccles were able to work their way slowly down the pitch eating up time. In the end they comfortably ran the clock down for a second straight home win over a top of the table side. This week Beccles travel to Basildon on Saturday where a win will put them in a good position for their highest ever finish. 28th OCTOBER BECCLES 12-7 HARROW Beccles Bulls moved in to the 3rd round of the EDF Energy Senior Cup with victory over Harrow. In a tight contest dominated by forward play Beccles were victorious by 12 -7. Harrow play their rugby in London Division 4 North West, the same level as Beccles. Beccles knew they would be in for a tough game but Rix had nearly a full squad to select from so they were confident of a win. The first half was very even. Neither side created many chances in a game that was never allowed to flow. Wade missed a long range penalty for Beccles before Harrow missed a penalty chance of their own. Harrow were first on the score sheet. A weak Beccles scrum was lost against the head and Harrow had a free run in to score a converted try under the posts. Beccles began to dominate the game more after this. They managed to draw level with a converted try of their own just before half time. They won a penalty five meters out and set up a rolling maul which drove over the line and Thomas touched down. Wade added the conversion and the half time score was 7-7. Beccles began to dominate more in the second half. They got on top in the scrums where White Horse Man of the Match Danny Rix was mastering his opposite number. With fifteen minutes to go Beccles got Harrow pinned back in their 22. Good charging down by Hinsley and Gedney didnt allow them to clear their lines. Beccles won another short range penalty and ran the same move they scored from in the first half. They got the same result with Thomas touching down his second try of the game. The conversion was missed but Beccles held out for the rest of the game to win by 12-7. Beccles play Crusaders on Saturday in the league. There is a presidents lunch before the game and all support would be welcome (KO 2:30). 4th NOVEMBER BECCLES 8-32 CRUSADERS Beccles crashed to their first home defeat of the season when they were beaten by Crusaders in a London Division 4 North East league match. Some good Crusaders back play was too much for the Bulls and the final score was 8 32 in favour of Crusaders. Beccles probably the better team for the first 30 minutes where they had the opposition in their own half for much of the game. White Horse Man of the Match Holtzer was carrying the ball well and keeping the opposition on the back foot. However, Beccles did not take their chances and only had one Wade penalty to show for their pressure. Crusaders began to get more territory and their back looked dangerous. The added two tries and a penalty in quick succession before half time to storm in to a commanding lead. The half time score was 3-20. Beccles tried to get back in to the game after halftime but their finishing let them down again. Beccles needed to keep the ball tight but could not maintain possession for long enough to hurt the opposition. Crusaders added a well worked try and then were awarded a controversial penalty try to further stretch their lead. Beccles managed to get on the score sheet when Rix finished off a rolling maul to touch down in the corner. As Beccles pushed for more points gaps began to open up and Crusaders were able to add one more try before the final whistle went. The final score was 8 -32. Beccles travel to Chelmsford on Saturday hoping to get back in to winning ways before their EDF Energy Senior Cup Match at Bury St Edmunds the following week. 11th NOVEMBER Chelmsford 57-6 Beccles Bulls Beccles travelled to Chelmsford with six regular starting players missing from the squad. The team struggled to cope with some strong back play from Chelmsford and were easily beaten by 57 6. Beccles were missing Lake, Thomas, Hinsley, Payne, Arnold and Harris through a variety of injuries and unavailability. Rix took the opportunity to give some of the younger players some experience in the first team, as well as bringing some experienced players back in to the side. Beccles took the lead in the match through a Wade penalty. Chelmsford soon scored a try but Beccles went straight back down the field and some good driving by the forwards earned another penalty which Wade slotted. After this it was all Chelmsford and some poor tackling through out the team lead to five more tries and a penalty in the first half. Beccles played better in the second half. The scrum started moving forward and Beccles had more of the ball. However, they still couldnt score and Chelmsford added three more tries and a penalty in the second half. This gave a final score of 57-6. Beccles travel to Bury St Edmunds in the third round of the EDF Energy Cup on Saturday. Bury are towards the top of London Division 3, the league above Beccles, so they will be hoping they have a few of their unavailable players back for this difficult trip. 18th NOVEMBER BURY ST EDMUNDS 21 BECCLES 8 Beccles went out of the EDF Energy Senior Cup despite a brave performance at Bury St Edmunds. A makeshift Beccles side gave their higher league opposition a scare before eventually going down by 21-8. A number of the Beccles players were unavailable due to a trip to Cardiff to watch Wales. This added to a number of injuries to key players meant that Beccles were down to the bare bones of the Squad. Bury are currently towards the top of London Division 3, the league above Beccles, so the Bulls knew they were in for a hard game. Beccles started the game the quicker and Bury struggled to cope with the tempo of the game. Beccles created chances the best of which came after a break from the halfway line by Rob Wilson. He was stopped just short of the line and the resulting drive to the line by the Beccles pack was held up over the line. Bury began to come in to the game but the Beccles back three of Gedney, Hall and Anderson coped well when the talented Bury backs broke through the line. Bury were reduced to taking on a long range penalty to take the lead. They managed to add an unconverted try just before the half time whistle to make the half time score 8-0. Beccles stepped up a gear in the second half. The pack was dominating with Danny Rix, Holtzer and Johnstone scrummaging well. Wilson and Maeer were winning lots of ball in the lineout thanks to some good throwing by stand in hooker Ling. Ling was made the Whitehorse Man of the Match. Beccles opened the scoring in the second half with a Holm penalty after some good kicking by Hadridge and Payne kept Bury pinned in their 22. Bury replied with a penalty of their own but then Beccles really began to turn the screw. Some good running by Charlie Hall drove Beccles deep towards the Bury line where the Bulls won a penalty. The pack set up a driving maul and Rix powered over the line. Unfortunately the referee was unsighted and couldnt award the try. Beccles were still right on the Bury line and the pack kept driving at the Bury defence. They were held up twice more before Rix got the ball down again, this time in sight of the referee for a try. Holm missed the conversion leaving Beccles 3 points behind with ten minutes left. Beccles tried to step up another gear but forwards were very tired after having to cross the Bury line four times to get the try. Beccles struggled to keep possession and Bury scored a converted try to extend their lead. They also added a penalty with the last kick of the game to give a final flattering score line of 21-8. This was by far the best performance of the season by Beccles who have enjoyed this cup run, beating three London sides before being edged out by higher league opposition. They now need to take this form in to their next league match, at home to Canvey Island on Saturday (KO 2:30PM) 25th NOVEMBER BECCLES 10 CANVEY ISLAND 0 Beccles returned to winning ways in London Division 4 North East with victory over Canvey Island at Beef Meadow. Beccles dominated a game that never really flowed and scored two tries to win 10-0. Rix was able to recall Lake, Hinsley, Thomas, Harris and Wade to the side after injuries and unavailability. The match started in wet conditions and the teams knew that the heavy pitch was going to make it hard going. Beccles had most of the possession and territory in the first half with the pack dominating at the lineout and scrum. Even with Hinsley in the sin bin for a trip Beccles restricted Canvey to two penalty attempts that were missed. Beccles opened the scoring just before half time. The forwards drove the ball up sucking in the defenders. The ball was shipped wide and good hands by Hall put Holm in the clear to sprint in and touch down in the corner. Wade missed the conversion from the touchline and the half time score was 5-0. Beccles put the squeeze on Canvey in the second half. They had them pinned back in one corner and a number of drives for the line were only stopped by some illegal tactics which led to one of the Canvey players going in to the sin bin. A couple of penalty attempts were missed in the swirling wind before Beccles finally sealed the win with another try. Canvey were pushing their way out of their 22 with Beccles down to 14 men again with Thomas in the sin bin. Beccles turned the ball over in midfield and moved the ball wide. It was recycled a couple of times before White Horse man of the match Wilson received the ball on the touch line and crashed over for a try. Canvey stepped up their efforts to get on the score sheet but the Beccles defence was solid and they were never threatened before the final whistle went for a 10 -0 victory. Beccles travel to Sudbury on Saturday for another important league match and will be hoping for another victory to move up the league. 2nd DECEMBER SUSBURY 22 BECCLES 10 Despite a late comeback Beccles suffered a defeat against Sudbury in London Division 4 North East. Two late tries were not enough to catch their opposition and Beccles lost by 22-10. Beccles still had a number of injuries but travelled with a strong squad keen to make it two wins in a row. Sudbury dominated the first half keeping the ball well and dominating territory. This restricted Beccles to one missed penalty chance in the first half. Sudbury missed two penalties of their own and the superb Beccles defence kept them out for most of the half. They did manage to breach the Beccles defence once with a try from a rolling maul. It looked like they had scored again when their scrumhalf went clean through but prop Rob Wilson showed his pace and managed to haul him back just short of the line. For this and a number of strong runs Wilson was made the White Horse man of the match. Beccles came out in the second half looking to take charge of the game. However a number of mistakes gifted the opposition three more tries. Beccles mounted a come back, keeping the opposition pinned in their 22. The first Beccles try came from a rolling maul. The ball went through a number of pairs of hands before sub Porter got the touch down, well supported by Sale. Beccles added another try soon after when the forwards sucked in most of the opposition defence with a number of drives. The ball was then shipped wide leaving Gedney free to touch down in the corner. However, the comeback was too late and the final whistle went with the score at 22-10. Beccles have a break from league action this week when they host Crusaders in the Norfolk Cup (KO 2:15). 9th DECEMBER BECCLES 5 - 18 CRUSADERS A poor first five minutes cost Beccles their place in the Norfolk Cup after defeat to Crusaders. Beccles went 12-0 down in the first five minutes but dominated the rest of the game. The gap was to big though and they lost by 5 18. Beccles had most of their players back from injury and put out a strong team. The team didnt start well and Crusaders quickly scored twelve points with some decisive back play. Beccles began to take control after this with their forward pack dominating the line out and scrum. Beccles were next on the score sheet. A penalty close to the Crusaders line was taken in to contact by Ling. A rolling maul was set up and the forwards surged over the line with Thomas getting the touch down. The conversion was missed from the touchline. Both teams had chances after this but strong defence meant that neither side could turn pressure in to tries. Crusaders did mange to add two penalties to further stretch their lead. The half time score was 5-18. The second half was dominated almost exclusively by Beccles. However, they didnt manage to turn the pressure in to points. Gedney was having a good game at fullback. He defended solidly and looked dangerous on the attack, he was made the White Horse man of the Match. Beccles were camped on the Crusaders line for long periods but could not break down some solid Crusaders defence. Despite all their pressure no points were added in the second half and the match finished 5 18. Beccles take on Stowmarket at Beef Meadow on Saturday in a must win league game. If they win they can go in to the second half of the season with a solid base and look to move up the league (KO. 2:15) There will be a VPs Lunch beforehand so all supporters will be welcomed. 16th DECEMBER BECCLES 17-0 STOWMARKET 2006 was a superb year for Beccles Rugby Club and it came to an end with a solid win over Stowmarket. After promotion at the end of last season Beccles are currently sitting mid-table in London Division 4 North-east. Their 17-0 victory on Saturday sets them up for further glory in 2007. Beccles had nearly a full squad to select from for this important match against a team who started the day level on points with Beccles. The start of the match was very scrappy with the heavy muddy pitch making playing good rugby difficult. Beccles adapted the better with their pack dominating their opponents in the set-piece. The pack came up with the first try of the game. The Beccles rolling maul penalty move was set in to motion. After being brought down once Beccles got it right and surged over the line. Thomas was at the back in his usual position and was given another armchair ride over the line for his 11th try of the season. The second try was added before half time. The forwards crashed the ball close to the line and when Rob Wilson squeezed a pass out the Robert Hall he bounced off the covering tackle and scored in the corner. Hall was made the White Horse man of the match. Beccles went in leading by 10 -0. Beccles didnt start the second half well and this gave their opponents some hope. The pressure began to build on Beccles and when Thomas went to the sin bin Stowmarket fancied their chances. Beccles were camped on their line but their defence was as solid as ever. After a ten minute spell on their own line Beccles were able to clear their lines and the Stowmarket heads started to go down. The final nail in the coffin came when Beccles added another try. Some slick passing across the pitch gave the ball to Arnold who powered his way over to touch down. Wade added the conversion and Beccles played out the final few minutes to secure a victory by 17 0. Beccles now have Christmas off and are back in league action on the 6th of January away at Canvey Island. 6th JANUARY CANVEY ISLAND 22 BECCLES 0 Beccles had a poor start to the year with defeat at Canvey Island. After a number of call offs due to illness Beccles travelled with a weakened side and lost the game by 22-0. The game was played in wet conditions making ball handling difficult. Canvey adapted to the conditions quickest and had Beccles pinned on their line in the opening minutes. Some superb defending, particularly some good tackling by Payne, stopped a number of Canvey chances. In the end the pressure told with the winger going over in the corner. Canvey scored another try in the first half when missed tackles allowed the other winger an easy run in. This gave a half time score of 10 0. It was not all bad for Beccles with White Horse man of the match Gedney improving with every game in his new role at full back. It was much the same in the second with Canvey dominating the game. Beccles conceded two tries to rolling mauls. The second of which came when Beccles were down to thirteen players after Maeer and Danny Rix were sent to the sin bin. Beccles never gave up and managed to create a few chances of their own. Some strong rucking in midfield by Johnstone won the ball, which went wide to Wade. He chipped over the top but was just beaten to the ball by his opposite number to prevent him scoring. The final score was 22-0. This week Beccles host Chelmsford and will be hoping for an improved performance and a return to winning ways. Kick off is at 2:15 and all supporters would be welcomed. 13th JANUARY Beccles Bulls 5-0 Chelmsford Beccles got their season back on track with a superb win over third placed Chelmsford. Despite spending the last thirty minutes of the game on their own line the Beccles defence was superb and they held out to win by 5 0. Beccles started the game playing in to a strong wind but still managed to dominate the first half. The new four man lineout was working well with Wilson securing lots of possession. This was down to some good throwing in the Porter, a last minute replacement at hooker who put in a superb all round performance to be named the White Horse man of the match. Beccles were not giving their opponents time on the ball with strong tackling by Rob Wilson causing disruption in the Chelmsford ranks. The try came after some good ball retention by the forwards. Ruthless rucking by Johnstone and Danny Rix secured the ball and it was shipped out to the backs by Hadridge. The ball went through hands quickly to take advantage of an overlap which allowed Harris to dive in the corner for a try. The conversion from the touchline was missed and Beccles went in to half time leading 5-0. Beccles had the wind behind them in the second half and used it to their advantage early in the second half to create a couple of scoring chances. These were not taken after some good Chelmsford defence thwarted the Beccles attacks. Chelmsford are chasing promotion this year and upped their game. They got Beccles pinned back on their line looking to get back in to the game. Beccles conceded 50 points when they played at Chelmsford earlier in the season but the defensive frailties of that day were not evident this time, the backline of Payne, Arnold and Wade were tackling superbly with Gedney and Cracknell mopping up anything they missed. The last ten minutes were spent yards from the Beccles line but the Beccles defence was solid. The back row of Rix, Thomas and Hinsley were everywhere making tackles and slowing down ball. Tate came on in the front row and faced three high pressure scrums right at the end of the game. The pack scrummaged superbly and the ball was cleared up field and the final whistle went for a fine victory to Beccles. Beccles have a friendly at Norwich this Saturday and are back in league action the following Saturday when they travel to Crusaders. 27th JANUARY CRUSADERS 9 BECCLES 8 Beccles were unlucky not to record an away victory over local rival Crusaders. Beccles had lead throughout the game but a controversial late penalty saw them go down by 9 points to 8. Beccles had a strong squad and selected a big front row in Rix, Wilson and Ling to enable them to dominate the set piece. Arnold was playing his last game for the club before flying off to New Zealand. Beccles started the game fast and surged deep in to the opponents 22. After a strong scrummage by the forwards Sale fed the ball to Thomas who crashed over the line for a try. The conversion was missed so Beccles led 5-0. Crusaders worked their way in to the game and began to put pressure on the Beccles line. The Beccles defence was superb and Crusaders were not able to score a try despite a long spell of pressure. In the end they were reduced to a penalty kick to bring the score to 5-3. Beccles extended their lead again before half time with a penalty from Wade to make the half time score 3-8. Both sides had spells of possession in the second half but both defences were on top and chances were at a premium. As the game moved in to the last fifteen minutes Crusaders stepped up their game. They couldnt pierce the Beccles defence but did manage a penalty to bring the score back to 6-8. With minutes left Beccles looked to turn a ball over in midfield. Beccles had three players to the breakdown quickly and thought they should have had a penalty for the isolated Crusaders player not releasing the ball. However, the referee deemed that the Beccles players had hands in the ruck and gave the penalty the other way. Crusaders kicked their penalty to sneak in to the lead. There were two minutes left to turn it around and Beccles worked themselves in to a good position centre field. The ball was spun back to Arnold who went for the drop goal to win the game. The ball was on target but dropped agonisingly inches under the bar to secure a cruel defeat for Beccles. Beccles now have two weeks without league action with matches at home to Woodbridge and Wymondham. There is a VPs lunch before the Woodbridge game on Saturday (Feb 3rd) and anybody interested in attending should phone Paddy on 01502715805. 10th FEBRUARY BECCLES 10-10 WYMONDHAM Beccles return to league action tomorrow after a two week break. They face high flying Upminster at Beef Meadow looking to avenge an unlucky narrow defeat earlier in the season. Last Saturday Beccles played a friendly at home to Wymondham. Wymondham came with a strong team and held Beccles to a 10 10 draw. Ling took over as captain for the day with Rix taking a well earned rest. He had to deal with a number of late call offs but eventually fifteen Beccles players took the field. Wymondham started quickly and were camped on the Beccles line. They never penetrated the Beccles defence and it was Beccles who took the lead. Payne intercepted a pass on the Beccles 22 and fed the ball to Hinsley. Hinsley was caught just short of the line but Rob Wilson was on hand to take a pass and score his first ever try for Beccles. Wade added the conversion. Soon after this Beccles won a penalty in front of the posts and Wade extended the lead. Wymondham came back at Beccles and scored with a driven maul. They then scored another unconverted try just before half when the winger touched down in the corner. This gave a half time score of 10 -10. In the second half both sides had chances but nobody was able to add to the scoring. Both teams began to tire on the heavy pitch and the match finished as a 10 -10 draw. 17th FEBRUARY BECCLES BULLS 11-10 UPMINSTER Beccles pulled off a superb win over second in the table Upminster at Beef Meadow on Saturday. 24th FEBRUARY BASILDON 32 BECCLES 10 Beccles lost to Basildon on a pitch that resembled a ploughed field more than a surface for playing rugby. Beccles struggled to contain their heavier opponents in the slippery conditions and lost by 32 10. The Bulls were hit by a number of late call offs which meant a few changes were made to the side that beat Upminster. Penny made a rare start at fly half and Maeer came in to the back row. The game started badly for Beccles when the Basildon winger scored under the posts early on. The Bulls were quickly back in to the game. They won a penalty in the Basildon 22 and Hadridge took it quickly. He fed Johnstone five yards out who crashed through the tacklers to score. The conversion was missed and the score was 7-5. Poor tackling meant that Basildon added two more tries before half time. After a shirt change at half time so the referee could tell the mud covered players apart Basildon then added another try. Beccles stepped up their efforts with some good driving play by the forwards. Rix was picking up well from the base of the scrum. He led the team superbly and was made the White Horse man of the match. Beccles got on the scoreboard again when a driving maul finished with a Rix touch down. Beccles were now fifteen points behind with ten minutes left. They tried to add to their score but struggled to get through the Basildon defences. In the end it was Basildon who added another try to give a final score of 32-10. This week Beccles entertain league leaders Saffron Walden at Beef Meadow (KO 2:30). 3rd MARCH BECCLES 3 SAFFRON WALDEN 19 Beccles Bulls lost to league leaders Saffron Walden at Beef Meadow on Saturday. In a match that could have gone either way Saffron Walden managed to pull away at the end to win by 19-3. Beccles put out a strong side to see if they could make it a clean sweep of victories against the top three at Beef Meadow. The start of the match was very tight with no score in the first twenty minutes. It was Beccles who got on to the score sheet first with a Wade penalty. Saffron Walden turned up the pressure after this and kept Beccles pinned back in their half. The Beccles defence was excellent and the opposition couldnt find a way through. Saffron Walden could only mange one penalty from twenty minutes of pressure and the half finished with the score at 3-3. The opposition added two penalties early in the second half to go in to the lead. Beccles upped their game looking for a try. They had pressure on Saffron Walden for long periods. As the game moved into the final ten minutes Gedney was held up just short of the line. Beccles then kicked a penalty into the corner and drove the resulting lineout. A number of drives were held up just short before they lost possession and conceded a penalty. Saffron Walden took it quickly and were only just stopped short of the Beccles line by some good covering by Wade, the White Horse man of the match. With the Beccles defence in disarray the ball was recycled and try scored under the posts. Beccles had little time to get back in to the game and Saffron Walden were able to add another penalty to give a final score of 3- 19. Beccles travel to bottom of the table Stowmarket next week in the penultimate game of the season. They will be looking for a win to secure their highest ever league finish. 31st MARCH Stowmarket 7-10 Beccles Bulls Beccles picked up their second away win of the season with a victory at Stowmarket. A late long range penalty from Wade was enough to win the match by 10 -7. Beccles were missing a few players for the trip but brought in Maeer and Hall to play in the back row and centre respectively. Beccles started the game playing in to the wind and it was tough going in the first half. Stowmarket had their team bolstered by five Fijians and laid siege to the Beccles line. The Beccles defence was excellent and some big hitting tackling from the whole team stopped any points being scored. With minutes to go before half time Stowmarket were reduced to a long range penalty attempt to try and score some points. This was missed and there was no score at half time. Beccles started the second half poorly and Stowmarket were able to score a converted try to go in to the lead. After this Beccles started using the wind to their advantage and pinning Stowmarket back in their half. After a driven lineout Whit Horse man of the match Sale sniped off the back of the maul and powered over in the corner. Wade added a superb conversion from the touch line to level the scores. Beccles then went in to the lead when they won a penalty just inside their own half. Wade stepped up and curled the kick round in the wind and between the uprights. Stowmarket turned up the pressure and Beccles looked in trouble when Rix was sent to the sin bin. Beccles upped their game and didnt let Stowmarket make their man advantage tell. Three huge scrums in a row with minutes left gave Beccles turn over ball and knocked to fight out of Stowmarket. Beccles held out to win by 7- 10. Beccles now have a week off before their last league game at home to Stowmarket. 15th APRIL BECCLES 5 SUDBURY 25 Beccles secured the highest league finish in the clubs history despite losing their final game at home to Sudbury. Beccles fought had but gifted the opposition too many ties and lost by 5- 27. Beccles knew they were going to be in for a tough game with a hard pitch and a hot sun beating down. The first twenty minutes were tight with few chances for either team. It was Sudbury who was on the score sheet first with a try. They soon added another to give a half time score of 0-10. Beccles started the second half well, the pack lead by Hinsley were causing problems all over the pitch and the back were tackling well. A cross field kick from White Horse man of the match Payne lead to the first try. It was collected by Harris who rounded his winger to score in the corner. Beccles tried hard to come back but couldnt quite take their chances. In the end it was Sudbury who scored next when missed tackles let them in for a converted try. As Beccles pushed to come back in to the game gaps started to open up in their defence and Sudbury were able to add two more tries to give a final score of 5-27. Beccles have one more game left, this Saturday, which is the Pony Moore Trophy game against Southwold. The second team should also be playing Southwold on that day and their will be an end of season BBQ after the game w ' 0 < d o { - M Y e o z " 0 < E Q ] e r ~ # $ ༮hMf|hMf|5CJ\aJh}.0JCJaJh}.CJaJh]CJaJh]0JCJaJhMf|hMf|0JCJaJhMf|CJaJhMf|hMf|CJaJD% 4 M &>u%&Y-f-}-555 >->A>)E6EMEXKfK\$gd]gd]\$gdMf|gdMf|$ % ' ) 4 L M =>uwy%%%% &&X-[-]-f-|-}-5555555>">$>->@>A>(E*E,E6ELEĸȦĸĸĞĸĞĸĚxxh]CJOJQJaJh]0JCJOJQJaJh]h]H*h]hMf|hMf|H*#hMf|hMf|0JCJH*OJQJaJhMf|CJOJQJaJhMf|hMf|0JCJOJQJaJ"hMf|hMf|5CJH*OJQJaJhMf|hMf|5CJOJQJaJhQICJaJ/LEMEWKZK\KfKKKPPPPPPP[[[[[\\cccccc3j5j7jAjYjZj"q%q'q1qHqIq yyyy4y5y~ ()'<=ېܐސ&)+5Ұh}.CJOJQJaJh}.0JCJOJQJaJh}.h}.H*h}.hMf|h]0JCJOJQJaJh]h]H*h]CJOJQJaJh]EfKKPP[[\ccc4jAjZj#q1qIq yy5y~ )'=ܐ\$gd]\$gdMf|gd]'5SȞǤū˲gdMf|\$gd}.\$gdMf|gd}.5RSǞȞǤūʲ˲ hMf|hMf|hMf|h}.h}.H*h}.CJOJQJaJh}.h}.0JCJOJQJaJ,1h/ =!"#$% @@@ NormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA@D Default Paragraph FontRi@R Table Normal4 l4a (k@(No List<U`< Mf| Hyperlink7>*S*Y(ph3f*W`* Mf|Strong5\B^`B Mf| Normal (Web)dd[$\$%4M &>uY%f%}%--- 6-6A6)=6=M=XCfCCHHSST[[[4bAbZb#i1iIi qq5qv w)w'=܈'5SȖǜţ˪0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000@08@00000%4M >uY%f%}%--- 6-6A6)=6=M=XCfCCHHSST[[[4bAbZb#i1iIi qq5qv w)w'=܈'5SȖǜţ˪{07{0{0s0X7s0s0{0Q{0{0s0 s0 {0s0 s0 {0s0s0{0s0s0{0s0s0{0s0s0{0s0{0s0s0{0s0 s0 {0s0#s0#{0s0&s0&{0s0)s0){0s0,s0,{0s0/s0/{0s02s02{0s05s05{0s08s08{0s0;s0;{0s0>s0>{0q0Aq0Ay0 {0 {0P$ LE5\_`cfK]ab^}:<}::}:,<}:"5}:D}:ԯ>}:lu=}:85}: ;}:쉒}:L=}:t5}:8=}:Tl}:tL=}:X=}:6}:lG6}:<7=}:d5}:=6}:lG<}:7}:0=}:6}:4H<}:lv5}:LE6}:D<}:=}:,<}:=}:$<}:%5}:6}: }:Lh=}:%;}:;}: /6}: <}:6}:f}:l}:4K}:\/=}:5}:D}:*6}:5}:T6}:#}:5~:5~:~:5~:~:6~:G6~:6~:6~:0; ~:\6 ~:76 ~:435 ~:? ~:K:~:5~:7~:%=~:F:~:7~:!~:<~:<=~:5~:F6~: 7~:4 7~:0=~:lR=~:S=~:r6~:<~:{ ~:d<!~:="~:|Y=#~:\!$~:L5%~:t;&~:<'~:$5(~: 7)~:4T:*~:(=+~:ܢ6,~:t7-~:t<.~:/~:Dȕ0~:l<1~:lx<2~:e=3~:$_4~:y<5~:4S:6~:57~:LN=8~:59~:LM=:~:*5;~:|~<<~:5=~:<>~:u<?~:ԓ<@~:<A~::5B~:;5C~:6D~:6E~:d<F~:<G~:/6H~:,06I~:<6J~:|688 a UUD%t%&k'S((5)u**0,566`888$;BBfCfCCCDDyDyDEELFLFQGQGIJJ8S8SSSSTT TfTfTmTTZZ"["[[[\\y]y]__``ppqqq qiqiqpqlvlvwwtwtwxxyy.|.|`|`|}}o..33nnBؖA)55>>,,ԮԮ !"#$%&'()*+,-.0/132465789:;<=>?@ABCDEFHGIKJLNMOPQRSTUVWXYZ[\]^_`abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz{|}~>> e $ $ [[L%|% &s'[((=)}**8,566f888*;BBpCpCCC#D#DDDEEVFVF[G[GIJJ>S>SSSS TTTlTsTsTT!Z!Z)[)[[[\\]] _ _``q q qq&q&qoqvqvqvvvv(w(w~w~wxxyy8|8|j|j|)})}u22==xxJI 1ǪǪ<<EE33ۮۮ !"#$%&'()*+,-.0/132465789:;<=>?@ABCDEFHGIKJLNMOPQRSTUVWXYZ[\]^_`abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz{|}~=O*urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags PlaceType=P*urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags PlaceNameBT*urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttagscountry-region9*urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttagsplace8*urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttagsCity TPOPOPOPOPOPOT4>:>Zb ""**226688I>>?K@%K)K lllqqk|n|Z]_ɘ͘3:ݬ33333333333333333#ih]S'O,sPBJCke n`| h Q"$+'s(v*%,$--/G3:W:):wBC2BLqB`#D*oD%JElGQIxI~>JTbJOK:uK~P/ QwR$lW`!n7rcr_suo/uy(xz |Mf|v<>F Z^ 1H>Lw(_r2_h yw2;Z@ lwqdY)FM, ad}.N3fg]F)6X%h8}QcEd@@$$ $F$$p@UnknownGz Times New Roman5Symbol3& z Arial7& Verdana"qhW3؆r3؆CY?CY?#242HX)?Mf|226-08-06 H Lowestoft&Yarmouth Johnstone JohnstoneOh+'0 ( H T `lt| 26-08-06 H Lowestoft&Yarmouth JohnstoneNormal Johnstone1Microsoft Office Word@b@* @hC՜.+,0 hp| ?Y 26-08-06 H Lowestoft&Yarmouth Title !"#$%&'()*+,-./0123456789:;<=>?@ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ[\]^_`abcdfghijklnopqrstuvwxyz{|}~Root Entry FT?pData e1Tablem2WordDocument.SummaryInformation(DocumentSummaryInformation8CompObjq FMicrosoft Office Word Document MSWordDocWord.Document.89q
