He has to cover more ground than anyone and is always at risk of getting isolated. He can also be the most effective strike runner in attack, able to appear anywhere along the line. The full back works mainly with the two wingers. Physical Importance More than any other player the full back needs to be able to sprint repetitively at near maximum pace when the ball is in play. He should focus on his sprint fitness over distances from 20 to 50 metres (depending on age). Key Technique More so than any other player the full back must be an excellent one-on-one tackler. He is often the last defender and if he misses his tackle a try is scored. Encourage him to stay upright as he approaches the tackle and make his decision as to what type of tackle he needs to make. If he is faced with a single attacker he needs to tackle low and put them on the ground quickly. If he is faced with a two on one situation he should always tackle the ball carrier (not look for an interception) and he needs to tackle higher to stop the pass. The Art of Coaching Children High Ball Catching The fullback might need to field long kicks and possibly high balls. He should remember to: Turn his body before he receives the kick so he does not knock it on. Reach up for the ball with both hands, keeping his elbows less than shoulder width apart. Bring the ball into his body before looking to move off. Of course he shouldnt take his eyes off the ball. 1 Tactical Nous The full back can be a devastating strike runner. He can remain hidden until the last moment and appear anywhere in the line. Mental Strength A good full back will be brave in all situations and very resilient. If he makes mistakes (which he will) he needs to put them behind him and get on with the next challenge.
